How to Teach Times Tables: Master Multiplication

If you want to learn how to teach times tables in a way that actually sticks, the secret is simple: pair quick recall with real understanding. Memorizing answers helps your child move fast, but understanding what multiplication means is what keeps those facts from fading. The good news is that you do not need to be a math teacher to make this happen at the kitchen table.

Why Understanding Comes Before Memorizing

Before your child memorizes that 6 × 4 = 24, they should understand what that question is really asking. Multiplication is repeated addition: 6 × 4 means four groups of six.

Show this with real objects. Line up four plates with six crackers on each, then count the total. When kids see that multiplication is just a faster way to add equal groups, the facts stop feeling random.

  • Use coins, blocks, buttons, or snacks to build equal groups
  • Draw arrays: rows and columns of dots that show the answer
  • Ask "how many groups, and how many in each?" before solving

A child who understands the concept can rebuild a fact they forget, instead of freezing.

How to Teach Times Tables in the Right Order

You do not have to teach the tables one through twelve in a straight line. Some are far easier than others, and starting with the easy ones builds early confidence.

  • Start with 2, 5, and 10 — kids often already know these from skip counting
  • Add 1 and 0, which follow simple rules
  • Move to the doubles like 3, 4, and 6
  • Save 7, 8, and 9 for last, since these are the trickiest

By the time your child reaches the hard tables, most of the grid is already familiar.

Helpful Tricks for the Tricky Facts

Once the easy tables are solid, a few reliable patterns make the rest easier to grasp.

  • The 9s finger trick: hold up ten fingers, fold down the one you are multiplying by nine, and the fingers on either side show the tens and ones
  • The 5s always end in 0 or 5 and are half of the 10s
  • For the 4s, double the number, then double again
  • Point out that 3 × 8 and 8 × 3 give the same answer, which cuts the facts to learn nearly in half

Making Daily Practice Short and Stick-able

Recall comes from frequent, low-pressure repetition, not marathon sessions.

  • Keep practice short, calm, and consistent
  • Quiz a small mix: a few new facts plus several your child already knows
  • Use flashcards, a multiplication app, or a quick verbal round in the car
  • Celebrate speed and accuracy, but never punish a wrong answer

Spacing practice over many days helps facts move into long-term memory.

Keeping Multiplication Fun, Not Stressful

Stress is the enemy of math recall. When kids feel anxious, they freeze.

  • Play games: roll two dice and multiply, or use card games
  • Turn chores into math: "We need 3 forks for 4 people — how many?"
  • Let your child teach you a fact, which deepens their own memory
  • Praise effort and strategy, not just the right answer
